PUTTING DOWN ROOTS UNDER A BIG SKY

No bird soars too high if he soars with his own wings. - William Blake

with dog and cat

We live in central British Columbia; an area of trees, lakes and rolling hills called The Cariboo. One of the characteristic wild sounds, heard across the lakes, is the call of the loon. However, part of me will always be connected with Africa, the continent of my birth, home of the African Elephant.

I spent a few years commercially growing things: landscaping, running a three-acre vegetable garden and a hydroponic lettuce greenhouse. I now concentrate most of my "growing" energy on the land around our house, along with its bird-life and "hand-made" vegetable garden. I've also been getting to know and participate more in our community of 108 Mile Ranch.

SINGING WINDS

I sit upon cold ground
and face into an icy Cariboo
wind coming from the west
and where it meets me
I pulse with life
and my own wind
rushes through me.
The late morning sun peers
over the fir trees on the
southern ridge and warms me inside
and all around.
Two shaggy dogs sit close by me
and perk their ears
and noses into the talking wind.
There is much abundance of life.
I sing loudly inside as I sit
on the cold ground
and breathe in the talking wind
whose words are far from subtle.
I breathe out my own winds
warmed by my lungs.
There is no place that I would rather be.
